Biotechnology and genetic engineering has become one of the key and future technologies. Against this background, the State Government of Saxony-Anhalt in November 2002 had approved the biotechnology initiative in the country with a five-year implementation strategy based on it. The ongoing five-year action plan is completed.

Since the beginning of the implementation strategy for the biotechnology initiative almost EUR 75 million funding in grants have been approved by the State Government. Since 2003 BIO Mitteldeutschland takes over the cluster management of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology in Saxony-Anhalt.
